Royal College of Veterinay Surgeons (RCVS)
The RCVS register veterinary surgeons and veterinary nurses to practise in the UK, and regulate their educational, ethical and clinical standards. Client: Royal College of Veterinay Surgeons (RCVS) Website www.rcvs.org.uk/homeAnnual Report and Financial Statements 2020
A 40 page annual report using duo-tone images throughout which helps give a disparate set of photos a complete consistent and uniform look and feel and helps give a serious quality to this document.
Membership newsletter
This newsletter is issued three times a year and is usually a substantial 24 to 32 pages long. There is a lot of information to pack in so balancing white space with squared up and cut-out images helps to improve readability of the text heavy document. The use of pull quotes, captions and sub headings makes the content more accessible and therefore helps the reader navigate through the publication.
This RCVS News received substantial positive feedback from members when first redesigned in 2007. Since then it has had an update due to a brand refresh in 2011. It also won the ‘Best Newsletter’ category at the 2008 MemCom awards.
The design was also rolled out to their News Extra, News Extra Election and VN Education.
"We have been working with Steven and his team since 2007 on a range of publications and other projects, in particular our newsletter and annual report – both of which have won MemCom awards since Ocean redesigned them.
Ocean work with high levels of creativity, but which is always appropriate to our audience.
Jobs are always produced on time and on budget, often in the face of our last-minute changes and challenging deadlines. Steven is unflappable and always calmly delivers an excellent product.
In fact, Ocean has become an extension of our team, since our in-house design resources have reduced, and we would certainly struggle without them."

Head of Communications, RCVSAnnual Review
Who said annual reviews can’t be fun? We have created an engaging, fresh and at times, eyebrow raising design for the college’s review. Initially a very wordy and long document, we split it into a easily accessible review using real people, veterinary surgeons and nurses to tell stories of how the college’s initiatives have helped them in their careers.
This publication used to accompany the hard working facts booklet (below).
RCVS Facts
This publication used to accompany the Annual Review but has since become a stand alone document. It is 32 pages of infographics, charts, tables and figures detailing the number of UK veterinary students, the distribution of veterinary surgeons and nurses across the UK, to a summary of the number of complaints and disciplinary hearings we have dealt with.
It has proved an useful tool to send to journalists and MPs and is produced as a printed brochure and a pdf file.
RCVS Pods
Ever wanted to hold your next meeting in a meadow, in a rain forest or how about in an aquarium?
Well RCVS did just that with the aid of three clear glass pods that were erected within three of their offices. RCVS asked us if we could create three wrap-around images that could give each meeting room some privacy and at the same time let in light, so they weren't too claustrophobic. Accessorise with some black and white 'friesian cow' themed cushions for the meadow, red and green chairs for to match the flying macaws of the rain forest and ocean blue chairs for the aquarium, not forgetting some themed treats like 'milky bars and jelly snakes, and there you have a relaxed, fun and private meeting environment, inspiring creativity.
