The RCM is the voice of midwifery. They are the only professional organisation and trade union dedicated to serving midwifery and the whole midwifery team. Ocean has been working with the RCM since 2010 and in that time we have worked on a variety of projects from their annual report, manifestos, promotion and social media campaigns and hard hitting reports aimed at helping real change within midwifery and the wider community. Client: RCM Website www.rcm.org.uk Domestic Abuse report We were honoured to be selected to design and produce this Domestic Abuse report for The Royal College of Midwives which was launched at their annual conference. Although Midwives are often trained to recognise domestic abuse and support women, they sometimes do not recognise that they themselves are victims of domestic abuse and the RCM has called for the NHS to do more to address staff experiencing domestic abuse. The full report can be downloaded here. This is some of the coverage on social media and main stream media that the report launch created.
State of Maternity Services report
Every year the RCM produce and publish their State of Maternity Services report which provides an overview of some of the ‘big picture’ trends that are taking place in the midwifery workforce and identifies some of the challenges that face the profession and maternity services.
Ocean have created these since 2013 and the most recent one was split into four separate reports for each country. The England and Scotland reports which were launched at the Houses of Parliament.
Highlights include the slow rise in the number of newly-trained staff and increasing obesity levels and age of mothers all of which have now been highlighted in the British press.

Infographics for social media use
We were asked to create a set of 10 simple infographics that could be used for their Twitter stream and also for sharing other social media. They were used to help promote their ‘Caring for You’ campaign which aims to improve RCM members’ health, safety and wellbeing at work so they are able to provide high quality maternity care for women and their families.
Each infographic focuses on a specific topics where increased pressure and demands are having a significant effect on the health, safety and wellbeing of midwives and maternity support workers.
Evidence to the NHS Pay Review Body
As well as being a professional organisation, the RCM is also a trade union that represents and supports practising midwives and maternity support workers in the UK. Thisevidence based publication was produced to set out the key arguments for not only increasing pay levels but also addressing the shortage of midwives which impact on maternity units, and staff morale.
